Course: Clinical Management of Thalassaemia & 7th National Thalassaemia Seminar 2015 UKM

Welcome Message
It gives me great pleasure to announce and to invite you to participate in the 7th National Thalassaemia Seminar (NTS), jointly organised by the UKM Medical Molecular Biology Institute (UMBI), the Ministry of Health (MOH), the Federation of the Malaysian Thalassaemia Societies (FMTS), the MyThal Club of UKM Medical Centre, and the Malaysian Society of Paediatric Haematology and Oncology (MASPHO). The 1st National Thalassaemia Seminar in 2004 triggered a series of events culminating in the approval by the MOH of a 4-pronged programme to address the problem of thalassaemia in the country. Our collaborative consortium have successfully organised the NTS every 2 years and have mainly focused on consolidating our efforts to implement the objectives. Amongst the key issues this time will be the prevention programme and fine-tuning the management plus other relevant issues.
The key objectives of this NTS series include updating patients, parents and professionals on issues relevant to thalassaemia. We hope the updates will translate into better care by the doctors and caregivers to the patients. The event will bring patients and parents together not only to interact, network and also share their experiences. The seminar will surely help increase awareness amongst the public about this disease especially with regards to prevention of this important genetic disease. Let’s stand together in unity to address the key issues in thalassaemia and provide the best care to our patients.

On behalf of the organising committee,
Professor Datuk Dr. A Rahman A Jamal
Organising Chairman
Advisor to Federation of Malaysian Thalassaemia Societies &
Director, UKM Medical Molecular Biology Institute (UMBI)
